Dear Neighbors and Friends,

 I would like to thank everyone in the 55th District (Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Twp) who took the time to vote in the 2022 General Election. I am honored that the voters chose me to represent them in the State House of Representatives. There is a lot of work to be done within the District and throughout Michigan. My experiences as a small business owner and a public official uniquely combine to offer the 55th District effective representation.    

Having served eight years (2011-2019) on the Rochester Hills City Council, including a four-year term as President, I’ve worked closely with our area’s elected officials, community leaders and residents. They have invested twelve years in me as their area-wide representative. Continuing to represent Rochester’s interests in Lansing seems an ideal way to generate an ongoing return on that investment.

In 2000, I founded Backus Payne, an independent agency specializing in medical liability insurance, from the ground up. The office was located on Walton Blvd across from Rochester High School. Despite having a comfortable salaried position at Medtronic, I took the entrepreneurial leap. Like many business owners, I didn't want someone else dictating my path for the rest of my career. The desire to control my time and work for myself led me to start Backus Payne, and this decision proved to be rewarding. One of my top priorities in Lansing is crafting policies that pave the way for aspiring entrepreneurs, like me 23 years ago, to realize their dreams.

Since making Rochester Hills my home in 1989, I've been actively involved in the community, contributing as a Cantor at St Andrew’s Catholic Church for over 30 years. My dedication extends to supporting various charitable initiatives, including fundraising concerts for Angels’ Place, and Neighborhood House, Older Persons’ Commission and several other organizations.   

Most importantly I’m a father, grandfather, and husband. I've been married to Susan Tisdel for 46 years, who herself was the owner of Susan Tisdel Ink on Main Street in downtown Rochester. Our children—Laura (Tisdel) Burton and Andrew Tisdel—attended Rochester Community Schools and Notre Dame Prep. 

My focus remains on effective representation and amplifying the 55th District’s voice at the state level. This website will provide a brief introduction and valuable links to my State House webpage, social media, and other information.
